Computerized Drug Use Evaluation with the Medication Use Decision Support System for Drug Prescription Information Data of Community Pharmacies
Shin Hyun-Taek

Abstract
A computerized medication use decision support system was used for evaluating the appropriateness of drug prescriptions by analyzing the prescription information data of 10 community pharmacies. Total 124,404 prescriptions including total 550,442 drug uses was processed for detecting the cases of inappropriateness in terms of dosage, potential drug interactions and duration of therapy. About 9% of drug uses(49,291) were deviated from the appropriateness of predefined criteria based on professional drug information databases. Among those 9% of inappropriate drug uses, the inappropriate dosages occupied 93.3%, drug interactions 1.6% and inappropriate duration of therapy 5.1%. Total drug costs of the inappropriate uses excluding other expenses for prescribing and dispensing occupied 7.9% of total drug costs. The results showed the serious problems in the safety of drug uses and health economics. It is recommended that the medication use decision support system fur preventing the inappropriate and even dangerous drug uses should be developed and applied to all the health care institutions including community pharmacies in Korea.
